Edinburgh West League - RULES

1.  PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES  To remain in this league, you must;

1.1. Ensure you can access tennisjeannie.com on a regular basis.  Register and subscribe the annual fee.  If you can not access the League via the Tennis Jeannie website you will be removed.

1.2. Check your e-mails regularly, as often as possible, as other players in your DIV may be trying to contact you.

1.3. If you're asked to respond, do it ASAP.  No one should have to wait for you to get around to it in your own time, or chase you for the info!

1.4. As soon as each League is published, make contact with the other players in your DIV, preferably via this website and arranged your matches ASAP, do not leave it to the end of the period.

1.5. YOU MUST PLAY ALL YOUR MATCHES EVERY MONTH.  This is not optional, it's an absolute must to make this type of league work!  If there is a genuine reason why you can't play them all, imediately inform the others in your DIV and the Tournament Referee the reason.  You will be given 1 more month to show you can and will play all your matches.

1.6. If any of your details change, update your My Accounts Page immediately.  Failure to do this causes a major problem for the manager & other players.  If you can't be contacted you will be removed.

1.7  Complete and maintain your Tennis Jeannie ‘Diary’ to let others know when you can play.

IF YOU DO NOT ABIDE BY ALL OF THE ABOVE YOU WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE LEAGUE

2  SCORING  All matches are played by completing 1 Super-Set, 13 games in total with a 7 point tie-brake at 6-6.  No other format is acceptable as this would affect the scoring system.

Maximum number of games in a match is 13, minimum number is 1.  If you run out of time after 1 game, that's it, that's the result.

Keep playing until you have played 13 games or you run out of time, in which case you just record the score at that point.  Of course you can meet again and replay the match (either from the same score or from 0-0) if both players agree and you have time.

If you run out of time and its say 5-5 then it's a draw.  Only completed games count.  You both score 2 points.

3  MATCHES – WHEN  Each player plays all the other players in their division once per period.  The number of matches each player must play each month is carefuly controlled to, MAX=4 MIN=3.  All matches must be played during the league period at a suitable time agreed by both players.  Players should plan to play all matches within the first 3 weeks, this give you time to re-arrange any matches.

4  MATCHES – WHERE  David Lloyd, Glasgow Road, Edinburgh.  However players may play their matches at any venue, indoor or outdoor - to be mutually agreed by both players.  It does NOT have to be at a David Lloyd venue.

5  MATCHES - HOW DO I WIN?  The winner is the player with the most games.  Or, to put it another way, the first to win 7 games is the winner, HOWEVER! You must still play the other games as every game counts at the end of the period.  Even if a player looses 0-7, they must still play the remaining 6 games.

6  RECORDING SCORES?  All scores are recorded using this web site.  Players are responsible for recording scores on the Tennis Jeannie website.  Only one player need enter the match score, either player can do this and it should be entered the same day.  Jeannie will send confirmation to the opponent and update the league tables automatically.

7  CONTACT  Each player must make every effort to play every match and is responsible for contacting others in their DIV.  However, don't leave it to others just because they should contact you - you can make contact with all in your DIV, and play your matches in any order.  Do not leave it until the end of the month.  Keep trying to arrange matches right up to the last day.  If you have offered many dates to others in your DIV and get no response or none are accepted, then before month end, send a message to the Tournament Ref explaining you have done all you can and I will demote the slacker/s.

8  POINTS  Win = 3   Draw = 2   Loss = 1 (for playing your match)  Walkovers are awarded 2 points.  See rule 21.

9  CONDUCT  Although competitive, this league is FRIENDLY!  So, if in any doubt about anything, line call, the score, distraction, anything, ALWAYS PLAY A LET!  It is never acceptable for any player to use bad language or behave in an aggressive manner, if the League Manager receives a report of such behaviour the player will receive a warning (yellow card) if it happens again they will be removed from the league!

10  CONTACT METHODS  The preferred method is by using Jeannie to arrange your matches.  As long as you have completed your diary this is by far the best method of communicating and arranging matches.  You can also call your opponent, contact telephone details are published on the website and are included on your hardcopy fixture list which you can print from the website.

11 DISPUTES  If any questions or disputes arise that are not covered in these rules, contact the referee for a binding decision.  You can contact the referee by clicking Contact Us and then select “Tournaments”

12  UN-PLAYED MATCHES  Let the League manager know ASAP why you are unable to play all your matches.  If it's in injury “no problem!”  let me know the estimated length of time you expect to be out and take a league vacation, I will then put you back in, when you are fit again.  If you have played 1 or more matches but not all, simply award a walkover on the match card to the others in your DIV that did not get to play you.  This rule applies to ALL incomplete matches, regardless of the reason why.

13  LONG HOLIDAY  No problem!  Just let the manager know via the Contact Us / Tournaments link, with the estimated length of time you expect to be away.  TO TAKE A BREAK - Contact the league manager any time BEFORE the next period starts.  E.g. 'Hi, please take me out for the next 2 months'.  TO RE-JOIN - You can only re-join by doing the following.  Contact the league manager during the 7 days BEFORE the next period starts.  Eg 'Hi, my ankle is better, please put me back in next month'.

14  REMOVAL  Any player not playing their games will very quickly drop down the DIVs with this scoring system.  However, the referee WILL REMOVE ANY PLAYER failing to play all their matches regardless of the reason.  If that sounds harsh, tough, this league is only for people who both can and will play all their matches, if you can't, or, are too lazy - don't join!  If you are removed from this league you will not be entitled to any refund of fees paid to Jeannie Ltd.

15  NEW & RETURNING PLAYERS  New players & players returning after injury or long holiday will be inserted into the most appropriate division.  If necessary this may result in more than 1 player being promoted/demoted to accommodate these changes.

16  FEES  Paid directly to Jeannie Ltd via the online tournament entry form on the website .  The fixed fee is collected annually by TJ and allows the player entry to the League and full use of the Tennis Jeannie web site for 12 months.

17  COURT BOOKINGS  Courts can be booked at DL 8 days in advance (Mon 08:00 for the following Tue). Try to book courts for 2 hrs and don't spend all day warming up, so you don't run out of time.  If you have time at the end GREAT! Just have a friendly hit.

18  RESULTS  At the end of each period, players are ranked on their results.  Rankings are decided by the order of priority listed below.

POINTS - The player with the highest number of points.

MATCH RESULT - The actual match result (head to head) between the players on the same points. (Ignored if more than 2 are tied)

MOST WINS – The player with the most wins that period.

MOST MATCHES PLAYED – Most players will complete all matches.  However this rule ensures that a player not playing all their matches will be given a lower ranking at period end.

GAMES WIN % - The player with the highest ratio of games won to games played.

ALPHABETICAL ORDER - if all factors are equal, Jeannie will simply list by sir name.

19  PROMOTION & DEMOTION  After players are ranked the League referee will try to move the winner up 1 DIV and the last placed player down 1 DIV.  However, this is not always possible for various reasons and if a player is clearly in the wrong DIV, 1 up 1 down is not in the best interest of the League.  Therefore, the League referee will move players to the most appropriate DIV possible.  Remember it’s not always possible to always move 1 up 1 down, some months players will be shifted up or down as necessary to accommodate those joining or leaving from the DIVs above.  If players joining in DIVs above you, you’ll go down, if they leave, you’ll go up.

20  PERIODS  Periods are 4 or 8 weeks depending on the time of year, start 1st of each month, ending date is stated on the My Club > Tournaments > Setup a Match.  However as soon as all the matches are played I will post a new league, so don't wait, play your games ASAP and get a new league posted.

21  WALKOVERS  Walkovers are awarded for; no shows, not responding & injuries. If you are awarded a walkover, you will get 2 points 0 games, they get 0 points and 0 games.

NO SHOWS - If an opponent fails to show up at a pre-arranged and agreed time, or is more than 15 minutes late, you may, play the match, offer to re-arrange or log yourself a walkover.

IF YOU DO NOT RESPOND - If you fail to respond to requests to play matches, at month end the others in your DIV will log themselves a walkover and you will be removed from this League.

OPPONENT NOT RESPONDING - If you have made every effort to offer a player match dates and they are unable to make these or offer you alternative dates, KEEP TRYING until the last day of the month, then you may log yourself a walkover.

INJURIES - If a player is injured at any time in a period (including a match) and there is not enough days left in the month to recover and re-arrange the match/es, the player must immediately inform all in your DIV and the League Manager you will not be able to complete your matches and give an estimate as to when you should be fit.  The player must then award a walkover for all un-played matches.

If a player needs to play their matches later in a month for whatever reason, they must inform the others in their DIV and the League Manager.  If they are then injured and unable to complete all matches then normal rankings and demotion will apply.

If a player leaves playing their matches so late in a month, is then injured and unable to play outstanding matches as a result and has not communicate why they have had to do so, to the others in their DIV and the League Manager, the player will be demoted more than 1 DIV.
